My Math-Fact Smoke Detector

Their own little Smoke Detector — a tool that spots the math facts they're about to forget (the smoke) so they can practice them before they cause a bad grade (the fire).

What you're building together

In 8 sessions they walk away holding a Smoke Detector they made themselves.

A real smoke detector goes off before there's a fire. This one goes off before a forgotten math fact costs them — on a test, at the board, in front of the class. They build it one piece a week: first the list of their own shaky facts, then the signal their body gives right before one slips, then the one move they make the second it beeps.

  • An index card, or a page in their notebook — theirs, in their handwriting
  • On it: their wobbly facts, their own personal "smoke" signal, and the one thing they do when it goes off
  • By session 7 they try to break it on purpose, fix what broke, and then show it to someone at Demo Day

Every kid in the world gets told to study more. Almost none of them can tell you WHICH facts are shaky, or how they'd know. Eight weeks of this and they can — and noticing your own weak spot before someone else finds it is a skill that long outlives multiplication.
