The Squeaky Gate

When you find what causes a problem, you are already halfway to fixing it.

Read it

The gate to Grandpa's garden made a loud SQUEAK every time it swung open. The sound scared the birds, and they flew away before Ben could watch them at the feeder.

Ben looked closely at the hinge. It was dry and a little rusty. He remembered that oil helps metal parts slide smoothly. He asked Grandpa for a few drops of oil and dripped them onto the hinge.

Now the gate swings open without a sound. The birds stay on the feeder, and Ben can watch them as long as he likes.

Retell it

Retell it: who is in it, what was the problem, and how did he fix it?

Say it out loud first, then type a little. Retelling is the real reading skill — this gets saved to her report.
