The Lunch Line Count

Every day at 12:05, Chidi stood at the end of the lunch line and watched the trash can. It was the loudest thing in the cafeteria. Thunk. Thunk. Thunk. Milk cartons, still full and still cold, dropping in one after another.

Chidi did not like waste. His grandmother saved rubber bands, twist ties, and the last sliver of soap. "If it can still be used," Nana said, "it is not trash yet." So Chidi borrowed a pencil from Mr. Okafor and started counting.

On Monday he counted twenty-two unopened cartons. On Tuesday, nineteen. By Friday his paper had five rows of tally marks and a number at the bottom that made him sit back in his chair: ninety-eight. Ninety-eight cold cartons, straight into the garbage, in one week, from one lunch period.

He showed the paper to Ms. Rivera, who ran the kitchen. Ms. Rivera looked at the tallies for a long moment and rubbed the back of her neck. "I knew it was a lot," she said. "I did not know it was that."

Together they set a plastic bin at the end of the line and taped a sign on it: SHARE TABLE — TAKE ONE IF YOU WANT ONE. Kids who did not want their milk set it in the bin instead. Kids who were still hungry took one out. Whatever was left at the end of lunch went down the hall to the after-school program.

Chidi kept counting. The next Friday, his number was eleven. He circled it twice. The trash can was quieter now, and he found that he did not miss the sound of it at all.
