Thirds, Fourths, and Comparing
Fractions help you decide what is fair — a real skill you will use your whole life.
The idea
The more equal parts a whole is cut into, the smaller each part is. So 1/4 is smaller than 1/3, because fourths split the whole into more pieces.
Equal shares
A ribbon is cut into equal parts. How much is one piece?
The bar shows equal parts. How much is shaded?
A garden is split into equal parts. How much is shaded?
The whole is shared into equal parts. How much is all of it shaded?
The shape shows equal parts. How much is one piece?
A pie is cut into equal parts. How much is two pieces?
