Place Value and Rounding

Knowing what a digit is really worth is how you catch your own mistakes — and rounding is how a builder guesses close enough, fast.

The idea

In a three-digit number, each digit is worth its place: in 472 the 4 means 400, the 7 means 70, and the 2 means 2. To round, find the two tens (or hundreds) the number sits between, then pick the one it is closer to.

Work it out

Ivy counted 472 seeds. What is the value of the 7 in 472?

A shelf holds 649 books. What is the value of the 6 in 649?

Sam counted 47 acorns. Round 47 to the nearest ten.

4050

Leo has 62 marbles. Round 62 to the nearest ten.

6070

A library counted 340 books. Round 340 to the nearest hundred.

300400

Nadia's class collected 250 cans. Round 250 to the nearest hundred.

200300

Work all the way through to finish. 5 of 6 right and it’s hers.
