Adding and Subtracting Big Numbers
Once you can handle hundreds, you can keep count of a real drive, a real collection, a real crowd — not just what fits on your fingers.
Line the numbers up by place: hundreds under hundreds, tens under tens, ones under ones. When a column makes ten or more, carry that ten to the next place; when a column comes up short, borrow one from the place next door.
Zoe's class collected 348 cans in the fall and 276 cans in the winter. How many cans did they collect in all?
A library had 512 books on the shelf. Over the week, 268 books were checked out. How many books are still on the shelf?
Marcus is building a wall. He counted 167 red bricks and 285 gray bricks in the pile. How many bricks are in the pile altogether?
A hall has 630 seats. On show night, 445 of the seats were filled. How many seats were still empty?
